Dr Tom,
I've just had my cholesterol tested at the local Boots Chemist shop.
The result was 5.4
When it was last done, only a couple of months ago, I think it was 7.5.
You saw the results.
Is it likely that this large drop could be due to the high dose of Omega 3 oils that I've been taking for the last couple of months.
I've not been taking anything else recently to try and lower it.

Allan,
it is the most likely cause for the drop. Omega 3 has a clinical license for treatment of raised triglycerides which are the precursor fats to cholesterol so this is probably the mechanism by which it would lower it.

Dr Tom, I read on http://flax-seed.org/omega_3.php that omega 3 has DHA which lowers cholesterol.
I also read that Tuna has no omega 3 and that Salmon is a safer bet to make sure I'm getting enough Omega 3 from my fish. Is that true ? |

Omega 3 does reduce the production of cholesterol in the liver and so reduces the level in the blood. It is also true there is more in tuna than salmon depending on whether the fish is free living and can eat the algae and plankton that actually contains the omega 3 .
The best bet is to take a good quality pharmaceutical grade fish oil and have your blood checked to see if your level is adequate.

Dr Tom,
The health condition that I have been concerned about since 2000 was cardiac artery disease accompanied with high cholesterol levels. I didnot know that I even had such a poor condition. I was 52 years old at the time. I thought I was fine, and was working out every day. I had a boat based business. I guess little bit of stress with the business, suddenly one day in the gym while I was exercising on the treadmill, both of my arms got numb and that cautioned me. It happened again during the day and then again that night while i was in bed.My wife Rina, call for the ambulance and from thereand it went downwards. The medicine that the doctors used on me on was Lipitor .Few days after , my condition normalized. So you should Buy Lipitor

Sandip,
it is unlikely that the lipitor had such a dramatic effect. I would put this more down to co incidence as the action of statins is over a longer period and reducing cholesterol usually has no impact on symptoms directly. I think all these drugs are best prescribed after a full assessment rather than bought over the counter.
