James,
autism is primarily a brain disorder where there is abnormal communication development. We now recognise a wide spectrum of autism from severely mentally handicapped to high functioning autism or aspergers syndrome.
It is imperative to ensure that correct nutrition and especially omega balance in the brain, which is principally made up of fat. Most of us are omega 3 deficient and this can be checked by a blood test which gives an accurate reading of omega 3/omega 6 balance.
I would also strongly recommend the book " Gut and Psychology Syndrome" by the neurologist Dr Natasha Campbell McBride, who has an autistic son and has produced significant improvements by dietary means.

A Dr Jaquelin Mccandles gave a talk on Autism at the 2006 LDN conference and frequently responds to question on the Yahoo group <Autism_LDN@yahoogroups.com> I think LDN is used in a slightly different way with Autism so I would suggest you listen to what she has to say on line www.lowdosenaltrexone.org I know some use mercury chelation as well (timersole in vaccines) our connection with LDN is that my wife uses LDN for MS so we have no experience with Autism.
